Apple "turned" to OLED

2023-03-06

Information from all sides of the market shows that Apple plans to launch new 13-inch MacBook Air, 11.1-inch iPad Pro and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED screens in 2024.

This is the first time Apple has adopted an OLED panel on the iPad.

Previously, Apple has launched iPad and MacBook Pro with Mini LED backlight in 2021.

In the early morning of April 21, 2021, Apple held a new product launch and released new iMac, iPad Pro, purple iPhone 12 and AirTag products.

Among them, the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro adopts Mini LED technology for the first time, embedded with 10,000 Mini LED lamp beads, the size is 120 times smaller than the previous generation of products, achieving 1600 nits peak brightness, 1 million:1 contrast ratio, P3 wide color gamut and other advantages.

On October 19, 2021, Apple launched two newly designed MacBook Pros, using Mini LED technology and equipped with 10,000 Mini LEDs.

Apple believes that OLED has low power consumption, high color saturation, and light weight, in order to be high-end, after the iPhone, the iPad display is also planned to switch to OLED. In addition to the iPad, the MacBook is also preparing to switch to an OLED screen.

The MacBook is targeted for adoption in 2026. The product sizes developed by the Macbook are 14 inches and 16 inches.

The LED Research Institute (GGII) said that Apple's switch to OLED in notebooks is constrained by the current cost and technical problems of Mini LED, and the thinness and foldability of OLED is also an important reason for Apple's turn.

Recently, some investors have asked BOE, the company's technical route is MLED, Samsung released a new OLED, how does the company demonstrate the commercial correctness of the technical route?

BOE said that at present, semiconductor display technology shows a diversified development trend, and the characteristics of different technologies can well match the needs of different application fields. The company is optimistic about the development prospects of MLED and OLED technology, and has a layout in both technologies.

BOE also frankly said that flexible AMOLED technology has many characteristics such as active luminescence, high brightness, high contrast, ultra-thin, low power consumption, fast response, wide viewing angle, all-solid-state easy flexible display, etc., and has unique advantages in foldable, curly and other aspects, so the penetration rate in the field of small and medium-sized sizes continues to increase, and is currently widely used in smart phones, while car and notebook computer products equipped with flexible AMOLED products have also come out one after another, and the penetration rate has gradually increased.

In the field of MLED, BOE's backlight products currently cover the expansion of products relying on COG, PCB, FPC, PI, and all application fields; In the field of direct display products, supported by the three core technologies of COG, COB and SMD, the products cover a series of application scenarios such as education, conference, cinema and consumer electronics.

According to BOE, in the third quarter of 2022, the company's TV product revenue accounted for about 20%, IT product revenue accounted for about 47%, MBL & other products accounted for about 33%, of which OLED product revenue accounted for about 21%.
