What is Light Pollution?

2023-01-04

Light pollution is a new source of environmental pollution after waste gas, waste water, waste residue and noise. What are the classifications of light pollution and what harm does it cause us? In Beidou Think Tank Network, we learned that light pollution mainly includes three categories: white light pollution, artificial daylight pollution and color light pollution.

1 white bright pollution

When the sun shines strongly, the decorations of buildings in the city such as glass curtain walls, glazed brick walls, polished marble and various paints reflect the light, bright white and dazzling. Expert studies have found that people who work and live in a white light pollution environment for a long time will suffer different degrees of damage to the retina and iris, vision will decline sharply, and the incidence of cataracts is as high as 45%. It also makes people dizzy and upset, and even causes insomnia, decreased appetite, low mood, physical weakness and other symptoms similar to neurasthenia.

2. Artificial daylight

After nightfall, advertising lights and neon lights on shopping malls and hotels are dazzling. Some strong beams even shoot straight into the sky, making the night like day, the so-called artificial daylight. In such a "city that never sleeps", the light intrusion caused by too strong a light source affects the daily rest of others, makes it difficult to fall asleep at night, disrupts the normal biological clock of the human body, and leads to low work efficiency during the day. The sky was too bright to see the stars, which affected astronomical observation, aviation, etc., and many observatories were forced to stop working. According to astronomical statistics, in the case of the night sky is not polluted by light, about 7,000 stars can be seen, and in the big cities where street lights, background lights, and landscape lights are litter, only about 20~60 stars can be seen.

3, color light pollution

Black, revolving lights, fluorescent lights and flashing colored light sources installed in ballrooms constitute color light pollution. It has been determined that the ultraviolet intensity produced by black light lamps is much higher than the ultraviolet rays in sunlight, and the harmful effects on the human body last for a long time. If people receive this radiation for a long time, it can induce nosebleeds, tooth extraction, cataracts, and even lead to leukemia and other cancerous changes. The color light source is dazzling, not only bad for the eyes, but also interferes with the central nervous system of the brain, making people feel dizzy, nausea, vomiting, insomnia and other symptoms. If people are exposed to colored lights for a long time, their psychological accumulation effect will also cause physical and mental diseases such as fatigue, dizziness, neurasthenia and so on to varying degrees.

The prevention and control of light pollution mainly has the following aspects:

(1) Strengthen urban planning and management, improve factory lighting conditions, etc., to reduce the sources of light pollution.

(2) Take necessary safety protection measures for places with infrared and ultraviolet pollution.

(3) Adopt personal protective measures, mainly wearing protective glasses and protective face shields. The protective glasses of light pollution include reflective protective glasses, absorption protective glasses, reflective-absorption protective glasses, explosive protective glasses, photochemical reaction protective glasses, photoelectric protective glass-ceramic protective glass-type protective glass-type protective glass-type and other types.

Although light pollution is not included in the scope of environmental prevention and control, its harm is obvious, and it is increasing and spreading. Therefore, people should pay attention to prevent the harm of various light pollution to health and avoid excessive exposure to pollution for too long.

The pollution of light to the environment is real, but due to the lack of corresponding pollution standards and legislation, it cannot form a more complete environmental quality requirements and preventive measures. The prevention and control of light pollution is a social system project, which requires relevant departments to formulate necessary laws and regulations and take corresponding protective measures.

First of all, in enterprises, health, environmental protection and other departments, we must have a clear understanding of light pollution, pay attention to controlling the source of light pollution, and strengthen preventive health supervision to prevent problems before they occur; Researchers should also explore methods conducive to reducing light pollution in science and technology. In the design scheme, the light source is reasonably selected. It is necessary to educate people to use light scientifically and reasonably, pay attention to adjusting brightness, do not abuse light sources, and do not expand light pollution.

Secondly, for individuals, it is necessary to increase environmental awareness and pay attention to personal health care. If individuals cannot avoid long-term exposure to light pollution in the working environment, they should consider the problem of preventing light pollution and adopt personal protective measures: wear protective goggles, protective masks, protective clothing, etc. Eliminate the harm of light pollution in the bud. Those who have symptoms should go to the ophthalmology department of the hospital regularly for examination, and timely detect the condition, so as to focus on prevention and combine prevention and treatment.
